The first regatta was held on the park’s lake back in August 1921

Wicksteed Park will celebrate its centenary with free boat races and a silver band. People are being invited to join in with the celebrations by enjoying a free-to-enter regatta and family fun day next Saturday August 20. The event has been inspired by the first regatta held on the park’s lake, in August 1921, three months after the park was opened by founder Charles Wicksteed.

The event, which starts at noon, will give people the opportunity to go out on the lake in a boat, enjoy boat races and relax to the sound of a silver band. , a traditional village fete and children’s entertainment. Categories in the baking competition are Best Biscuit, Party Cakes – Boat Themed, and Picnic Cakes. In the Vegetable Showdown, the different prizes are Giant, Perfectly Imperfect and Flawless.Wicksteed Park activities coordinator Ruth Rignall said: “We are appealing for people to show off their creativity and skills in this classic village fête baking competition and also reintroducing a classic community competition, in the vegetable showdown.

Prizes will be awarded in all categories and entry forms must be submitted by Wednesday . If you would like to enter, be sure to contact the Community and Heritage department at community@wicksteedpark.org for an entry form and a list of criteria.
