Tourist town in Alberta province ‘seeing potentially 30% to 50% structural damage’ and ‘significant loss’ of buildings
Jasper is in the middle of Jasper National Park, in the province of Alberta. The town and the park, which draw more than 2 million tourists a year, were evacuated on Monday, when officials estimated there were 15,000 visitors in the park.
Parks Canada said there had been a “significant loss” of buildings inside the town but added it could not give specific details of the damage or which areas had been hit.Jasper mayor Richard Ireland said the town was beginning to come to terms with “the devastating impact” of a fire that had ravaged the community.
The federal government and other cities in Alberta are sending emergency crews. In addition, a total of 400 firefighters from Mexico, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand are due to arrive in the coming days. Ashley Kliewer, co-owner of a restaurant in the middle of Jasper, told the Canadian Broadcasting crop she was devastated.
The Park Fire in Butte County, California, exploded overnight from about 566 hectares on Wednesday to about 18,400 hectares on Thursday, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. More than 4,000 people were evacuated in Butte County and the city of Chico, said Megan McMann a spokesperson for the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.
