The Cotton Street shop is set to close within weeks after a rescue bid for the firm fell through
The Wilko store in Cotton Street will close in the next few weeks after a rescue bid for the hardware chain, which went into administration last month, fell through.South Scotland Labour MSP, Colin Smyth, said: “This is devastating news for Wilko’s staff and their families, especially after it looked like a deal might have been done to save the retailer.
“However, they are under pressure and under threat, with big chains pulling out and local shops being undercut by online shopping, leaving too many high streets dominated by ‘to let’ signs. But the retailer was forced to call in administrators PricewaterhouseCoopers in August after it hit trouble. Since then, Poundland owners Pepco Group have bought more than 70 Wilko stores – but not the one in Castle Douglas.
