Gov. Phil Murphy discusses a few proposals about how to combat high gas prices in New Jersey.
But will New Jersey join the list? Gov.Speaking Thursday night during his call-in TV show on News 12, Murphy said it would be difficult to suspend New Jersey’s gas tax because, by law, the money is used to help“Folks say, ‘Well, maybe you could stop the project,’” the governor said. “The problem is: When you reboot it, it costs a lot more money to start.”
There is a proposal to temporarily reduce New Jersey’s gas tax. State Sen. Shirley Turner, D-Mercer, said last week she will introduce a bill toThe state’s gas tax of 42.4 cents per gallon is the fourth highest in the nation. Turner’s bill would roll back the tax for gas and diesel fuel to the 2016 rate of 14.5 cents for 60 days.
Some federal lawmakers have introduced legislation in Congress to institute a federal gas tax holiday. The federal gas tax is 18.4 cents per gallon, on top of gas taxes that states levy.
Murphy was asked by reporters why New Jersey shouldn’t do both — enact a rebate while also pushing for a federal gas tax holiday at the same time.
