Will Smith won best actor for his portrayal of Richard Williams, the father and coach of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams in “King Richard” at the Oscars
An eventful night for Will Smith ended with his first Oscar.
“Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family,” a visibly emotional Mr. Smith said in his speech. Mr. Smith said that part of working in Hollywood was taking abuse and letting people disrespect you, “and you gotta smile and act like that’s OK.” He said that he was under heavy stress to “protect” his family and members of the cast and crew of the film, and that he was struggling with the pressure.
Sitting near the stage in the Dolby Theatre Sunday night, Mr. Smith and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, were the butt of jokes by presenters over the course of the night.
