This year marks the 75th anniversary of the ship landing at Tilbury Docks, a year dubbed ‘the diamond jubilee of modern, diverse Britain.’LEGENDARY POET Benjamin Zephaniah and Howard Gardner, the son of Windrush passenger Alford – both second generation – reveal what the anniversary means to them.will be celebrating the Windrush generation throughout the year and look forward to the celebrations on Windrush Day in June.“It wouldn’t be the same without us,” Howard Gardner says.
They formed a cricket team “which was their way of getting to know the locals” with the sport loved in Yorkshire as well as in the Caribbean. Howard was blessed to grow up in a large family, the eldest of 8 siblings, but the fact that younger generations in the family are taking a keen interest in the Windrush generation fills him with pride.
“No one would bat an eyelid if a politician said I’m wearing some bling today. Everybody now says I’ve got a film ‘dropping’ or I’m dropping my new album. Our elders might have struggled at first, but that experience has created a special sense of solidarity and connectedness that binds us. Not only did we integrate into society, but we exceeded expectations, maybe even our own, and have helped shape its destiny for the better.
