Discover two Spanish wines perfect for your weekend enjoyment: Verdejo, a crisp and refreshing white wine with notes of grapefruit and mango, ideal for grilled fish or tapas; and Rioja Reserva, a medium to full-bodied red with ripe fruit and vanilla oak, complementing roast lamb or Mediterranean vegetables.

Wines for the Weekend: Verdejo can taste uncannily like sauvignon blanc, while Rioja Reserva is a favourite of Irish drinkers

The Rueda region produces almost exclusively white wines, usually made using the local verdejo grape or sauvignon blanc. Verdejo has been grown here for centuries. It can taste uncannily like sauvignon blanc at times, and is a very popular aperitif wine in Spain. We are more familiar with Rioja Reserva in this country. The Tesco version is a classic with ripe fruits overlaid with vanilla spice, the result of being aged in oak barrels for an extended period. This wine is floral, light in alcohol with grapefruit and mango fruits. Crisp and refreshing, this would go very nicely with grilled white fish, or you could enjoy it as a Spanish aperitif with tapas.
