Churches rallied for decades to end abortion. With major victories in hand, will they step up to take care of the children they fought to save? Faith-based pregnancy centers in Florida say they’re up for the challenge. But they're going to need help.
What does the overturning of Roe v. Wade mean for Floridians seeking an abortion?
The pregnancy centers are getting busier, but Curatalo had no projection of how much the numbers are expected to go up. Nearly 94% were in the first trimester, while the remainder, 4,850 abortions, were done in the second trimester, from 13 weeks to the 24 weeks permitted under Florida law last year, data shows.
“We have been preparing for this for a long time,” Liebert, an obstetrician/gynecologist in Bradenton, said. “We have always met the challenge in movement. It is amazing how generous people are.” In 2019, she had to turn away 147 pregnant women and make referrals for potential openings in other homes, she said.
That program is the Pregnancy Support Services Program and $15.8 million of taxpayer money has been earmarked for it over a four-year period since fiscal year 2018, according to the Florida contracts tracking system. The current year funding is $4 million. The Archdiocese of Miami receives around $150,000 from the state program, said Curatalo, director of the respect life ministry. The state program with taxpayer support is under fire from Floridians for Reproductive Freedom, an advocacy organization that supports abortion rights.
Some of the misinformation is that abortion and birth control can cause depression, future infertility, breast cancer and suicidal thoughts, the report said. The nonprofit currently has two centers in Naples and one each in Fort Myers, Gainesville and Sarasota, and two mobile clinics. The five centers collectively served 4,745 clients in 2021 and prevented 1,470 abortions, according to its website.
The initiative calls on parishes to assess what resources are available and what services are needed at the local level, according to the program’s website, walkingwithmoms.com.Tester, with Catholic Charities in Central Florida, said Catholic Charities in his region recently launched a new service because of the “Walking with Moms” initiative. It’s a mobile diaper drop-off service to make it easier for families.
“The ministries are as varied as our churches and their contexts, but include providing pregnancy testing and counseling, ultrasounds for expectant mothers, parenting classes, abortion recovery programs, fostering and adoption opportunities and more,” she said.
