: they provide a connection not just to this summer now, but the summers of our great-grandparents, for whom it meant big blocks of vanilla; they remind us of our grandparents, for whom it meant Mr Whippy, and of our parents who witnessed the birth of such novelties as Strawberry Split, Cornetto and Fab.

The ice cream van is one of few true culinary connections across generations. One of my earliest memories is of my grandad pressing a crumpled fiver into my hand, and of running to a van to order an Oyster for him and my grandma, and a Calippo for myself. It was the moment that mattered; the excitement of hearing, then seeing the van, which at any second could have driven off – but seemed to be there just for us, as we were passing. It was the childlike joy of realising that yes, we would like an ice cream, and then debating which one to have.
