The head of the association acknowledged the Russian invasion of Ukraine complicated the freeing of the basketball star, but said it's committed to her release.

The head of the Women's National Basketball Association says the league is working"every angle" to secure the release of Brittney Griner, the star player arrested in Russia after authorities said they found a cannabis vape pen in her luggage.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert reiterated the association's backing for the Phoenix Mercury player as it began its draft on Monday,. Previously, her teammates and U.S. officials have been cautious about their public remarks as Griner's situation has been complicated by the political fallout from Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

"Obviously, we're in a very complex geopolitical situation with Russia, Ukraine, so this continues to be complex," Engelbert said, according to ESPN."We're getting a ton of support from the government, from specialists." Engelbert said Griner has the league's"full support" as it works with"her legal representation, her agent, elected leaders, the administration" to secure her release as soon as possible. Not a day goes by the league doesn't talk to someone about how to secure her release, she said.

As the WNBA began its player draft Monday, Commissioner Cathy Engelbert reaffirmed the basketball league's support for Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner, saying the league is still working to secure her release from Russian custody.
