Shearly Gaines is charged with murder in the death of 87-year-old Mae Brown, who was found dead in her Bronzeville apartment Saturday.
Gaines was diagnosed with schizophrenia when she was 20, and Brown was the payee who received her daughter's Social Security disability checks, prosecutors said.
When Gaines' younger sister spoke to their mother the night of Oct. 14, Brown told her that Gaines as still there. The younger daughter advised her mother to tell Gaines to leave, prosecutors said. Gaines, who has been homeless for several years, was arrested Wednesday and was allegedly wearing the same clothes she was seen wearing in the surveillance footage from the apartment, prosecutors said.
