Deise Moura dos Anjos, who was facing charges of poisoning her in-laws with an arsenic-laced Christmas cake, was found dead in her prison cell in Brazil. Authorities have ruled her death as self-inflicted mechanical asphyxiation.
A woman accused of fatally poisoning three of her in-laws with an arsenic-laced Christmas cake in Brazil has died in her prison cell. Deise Moura dos Anjos' body was discovered during a routine check at a women's penitentiary. Authorities have reported her cause of death as 'self-inflicted mechanical asphyxiation'. Dos Anjos was in custody since January 5th, facing charges of poisoning flour used to make the festive fruitcake.
Investigators were also probing her potential involvement in the death of her father-in-law, Paulo Luiz dos Anjos, who died in September last year from an intestinal infection after consuming bananas and powdered milk brought to him by Dos Anjos. His body was exhumed, and tests confirmed the presence of arsenic. Dos Anjos was believed to be alone in her cell at the Gua ba Women's State Penitentiary when she died. She had spent a month at the Torres Women's State Prison before being transferred for security reasons last Thursday. The mass poisoning occurred on Christmas Eve when seven family members fell ill after eating the cake. Three succumbed within hours. Tatiana Denize Silva dos Anjos and Maida Berenice Flores da Silva died from cardiac arrest, while Neuza Denize Silva dos Anjos reportedly died from 'shock caused by food poisoning'. Dos Anjos' mother-in-law, Zeli dos Anjos, survived despite eating two pieces of the cake. She was discharged from the hospital in January. A 10-year-old child who consumed a portion of the cake also survived and was discharged. Police suspect Zeli was the intended target. Detective Marcus Veloso stated, 'Her main target was Zeli. She was there on 2 September when the coffee with powdered milk was prepared, along with her husband. She was also present when Zeli baked the cake in Arroio do Sal.' Following Dos Anjos' death, the Penitentiary Police announced, 'The circumstances will be investigated by the Civil Police and the General Institute of Forensics.
