Three men are on trial accused of raping and sexually assaulting a woman they met at a nightclub in Dublin in August 2019. The woman claims she was incapacitated and unable to consent to the sexual activity.
A woman who alleges she was raped and sexually assaulted by three men she met at a nightclub in Dublin in August 2019 has given evidence in their trial. The three men, aged between 34 and 42, with addresses in Dublin and Wicklow, deny any wrongdoing and say any sexual contact with the woman was consensual. The woman told jurors that she had been drinking with her housemate on the evening of August 30th before going to the nightclub.
She said she remembers leaving the club but has no memory of meeting the three accused men or going to a vehicle with them afterwards. The woman said she met her housemate at the club and they went for drinks before heading to the nightclub. According to the housemate, she told her friend she was going to leave, and her friend said she would stay. The housemate then went home. Upon returning home, the woman’s housemate said she was wearing a jacket that wasn’t hers. Initially hesitant, the complainant eventually told her what had happened, saying there were three or four men involved. She explained that she was in a car with one man who was having sex with her. The woman said she wanted to fight back but couldn't feel her body move. The car stopped, and someone else got in. She told her housemate that they continued to have sex with her in the car and later took her to a house where they raped her again. The woman recounted that she tried to kick one of the men away while in the bedroom, and they responded with insults like, “You f**king b***h” and “Oh, she’s coming too”. The housemate encouraged her to call the Rape Crisis Centre and later accompanied her to the Garda station and the sexual assault treatment unit. The defense lawyers representing the three men argued that the woman’s account is unreliable due to her intoxication and lack of memory. They also highlighted inconsistencies in her testimony and suggested that she may have consented to the sexual activity. The trial continues
