Aoife Howard Ring was horrified when she discovered a fake Instagram account using her name and picture. The account, which had been active for some time, posted mundane details about her life but also liked inappropriate content about women. Despite contacting authorities and Instagram, Ms. Howard Ring was unable to get the account deleted until she sent a stern direct message to the creator.

At that point Ms Howard Ring used her account to post mostly “mundane” stuff about her life and asked to swap Instagram handles with one woman.“One of the girls I work with went to add me and said, ‘Oh, is this your account?’” she recalled on A member of staff logged into the academy’s Instagram account and allowed her to look through the fake profile’s posts.“They had a countdown to my wedding as me, they wished my husband a happy 30th birthday and a collage of photos of us together,” Ms Howard Ring said.Most of it was fairly ordinary stuff but Ms Howard Ring soon realised there was a “dark side to it” as well, with the account having liked a number of inappropriate posts about women.
