A woman faced a hefty fine after being caught using two mobile phones while driving by the new Garda 'stealth truck'. Cork Beo reports that Garda i apprehended the woman as one of 54 distracted drivers targeted by the unmarked Garda HGV in Cork this week. Ahead of the extensive Roads Policing Operation throughout St. Brigid's Bank Holiday Weekend, the Garda Road Policing Unit in Cork utilized the Scania lorry cab on the M8, the M25, and throughout Cork city.
This operation, named Operation Iompar, launched last September, aims to deploy unmarked HGV tractor units to give Roads Policing Units a better vantage point over unsafe driving behavior on motorways and dual carriageways across the country. The elevated position of the HGVs allows authorities a clearer view of drivers using phones or not wearing seatbelts. These unmarked vehicles work in tandem with marked and unmarked Road Policing Unit vehicles to catch distracted drivers, contributing to safer roads. Studies have shown that making a phone call increases the likelihood of being involved in a collision by four times, while texting increases that risk to 23 times. Chief Superintendent Colm O’Sullivan emphasized, 'Driving any vehicle requires 100 percent attention, 100 percent of the time. A driver cannot do so if their attention is elsewhere, such as viewing social media posts or texting while driving. Any use of a mobile phone or other devices when driving distracts your attention from your driving, and it is highly likely that you will be involved in a collision. ' He urged all drivers and road users to concentrate on their use of the roads during the Bank Holiday weekend, emphasizing sole focus on driving and avoiding driving under the influence of any intoxicant. For cyclists and pedestrians, he stressed the importance of being aware of their surroundings, weather conditions, and daylight. He also reminded cyclists and pedestrians using roads at night to be visible to other road users by using lights and wearing reflective clothing. Chief Superintendent O’Sullivan concluded, 'Together, let’s make this Bank Holiday weekend a safe and enjoyable weekend for everyone.
