Jez Fitzsimmons died from complications, two years after he was stabbed in Blackpool by his childhood friend Tracey Simmonds
A woman has been jailed for three years for causing the death of a 'good man with a heart of gold' who died two years after he was stabbed at a flat in Blackpool.
Moments before the attack, Simmonds and Walton were seen whispering together on a sofa. The Honorary Recorder of Preston, Judge Robert Altham, said he was "quite sure" the pair were plotting an attack, with weapons. A loop of bowel had protruded into the abdominal cavity and was leaking. On October 9, worried family members called the police, who forced entry to Mr Fitzsimmons' flat and discovered he had died. A post mortem concluded he died from peritonitis, as a result of the injury. The court heard medical negligence was a contributory factor in Mr Fitzsimmons' death, however had he not been attacked in 2017 the issue would never have arisen.
She said although her dad suffered with an addiction to alcohol, he was a good man and would often withdraw in order to be sober to see his granddaughter, as he wanted to set a good example to her. "Just because someone is an addict, it does not make them a bad person", she said. Judge Altham said the fatal wound was caused by Walton, however Simmonds inflicted further non-fatal wounds when she joined in the attack.
