Hospital bosses in China have been warned not to turn patients away because of coronavirus lockdown rules after a pregnant woman lost her baby when she was refused entry.
The woman miscarried after being left to wait for two hours outside Gaoxin Hospital in the city of Xian on New Year’s Day, reportedly because her Covid-19 negative test result was out of date.
The scandal also came to the attention of the ruling Communist Party, with Vice Premier Sun Chunlan saying she was ‘pained and deeply ashamed’ and adding: ‘Medical institutions… must not simply turn away patients on any excuse during Covid control.’On Friday, the city government said that people without proof of a negative test result within 48 hours should no longer be blocked from leaving home to go to hospital.
Two other ranking officials with the Xian Emergency Center and Municipal Health Commission were given formal warnings by the central government.Xian’s 13 million residents have spent the past 16 days living under a strict lockdown to try and stamp out a month-long outbreak which has now seen more than 1,800 reported cases.
