Ms. Buckley's used Toyota Yaris failed soon after purchase revealing a severely corroded and welded rear axle. Despite the NCT's initial finding of no fault, the incident raises questions about the effectiveness of inspections in detecting hidden damage.

A woman in Ireland is raising concerns about the National Car Test ( NCT ) after discovering her used car had a severely corroded rear axle that was welded on, posing a significant safety risk. Just days after purchasing the Toyota Yaris, Ms. Buckley noticed the right-hand rear wheel was turned outwards. Upon further inspection, she found the wheel had been welded onto the axle, which was heavily corroded. The car subsequently broke down, leading to the discovery of the issue. Ms.

Buckley contacted the NCT and requested an investigation. An inspector and an independent assessor from the AA visited her home and confirmed the presence of a crack/split on the axle, which they believed caused the wheel to lean. However, they noted that the corrosion was not visible during the initial inspection due to limited access. Despite this, the NCT concluded that the vehicle had passed its test appropriately and found no basis for Ms. Buckley's appeal. The situation has sparked concerns about the thoroughness of NCT inspections, especially when it comes to hidden damage. Ms. Buckley expressed her disappointment, stating that the car had previously failed an NCT in Portlaoise before passing in Deansgrange. Adding to the controversy, it was later revealed that the AA's auditor who inspected the vehicle had previously been employed by Applus+, the company that operates the NCT. This has raised questions about potential conflicts of interest. The AA maintains that its employees adhere to strict policies regarding conflicts of interest and that the auditor would never have been assigned to inspect a location where they previously worked. This incident is not an isolated case. Another recent case involved a woman who purchased a used car with a newly issued NCT certificate, only to discover it had been written off and badly repaired. In that instance, the NCT certificate was revoked. Ms. Buckley's experience highlights the need for greater transparency and accountability within the NCT system to ensure the safety of all road users
