Odessa Carey, 42, was sentenced to a hospital order after killing her mother, Odessa Senior, 73, in 2019. Carey, who was suffering from schizophrenia, is unaware of the crime she committed. Her brother Lawrence, who visits her regularly, remains hopeful she will recover but says she will have to face the horrifying reality of her actions.

A woman who killed her own mother with scissors while severely mentally ill will face the horrifying reality of her actions if she ever recovers, her family has said. Odessa Carey, 42, was sentenced to a hospital order after killing her mum, also called Odessa, in April 2019. Odessa Senior, 73, was tragically found dead on a bed at home in Ashington, Northumberland, after being decapitated and cut open.

Carey, who was said to have carried her mum's head in a bag before hiding it in a cupboard under a sink at a friend's home, was diagnosed with schizophrenia within months of being detained at Rampton Secure Hospital in Nottinghamshire. Her brother Lawrence has said he still loves his sister, despite the horrifying tragedy, and does not blame her for what she did. He has spoken out about the family's unimaginable grief, saying he remains hopeful his sister may one day recover - but that she will have to process the unthinkable if she does. 'It's going to be harder for her than it is for us,' said dad-of-five Lawrence, who revealed he was the only family member to still visit his sister. 'I'm not angry at what she's done because it wasn't her, it was the illness. I just want to help her and realise what we need to do for her. I'm not giving up on her.' Odessa Snr had been in remission for bladder cancer at the time of her death, Newcastle Crown Court heard during the 2020 trial. Lawrence told Chronicle Live that Carey remained unaware of what she'd done. The family had previously spent years trying to get her the help she needed since she began suffering with mental illness in her childhood. In the years before the killing, her behaviour became more disturbing, and she would claim her real mother was missing and replaced with an imposter. Lawrence said he always feared his sister would kill their mum one day, but felt his concerns were not listened to. Doctors told Lawrence that changes to Carey's medication might help her understand the truth, and that it was possible she could be moved to a lower security hospital should she make progress. 'One of her doctors said she still has a long, long way to go. It's hard for me to sit there and look at her as a sister and to see that she still hasn't come to realise what she's done,' he said. 'They said they would try to adjust her medication to block that bit out to face the reality. They are giving her medication and if she can adhere to that and stick to that they could take her from high secure to a medium secure hospital.' Lawrence is desperate for others to understand that his sister, and other severely mentally-ill people, are not bad people. 'It's an illness and if it's not treated properly it will take over,' he said. 'We are not talking about bad people we are talking about ill people. Before Dessa got ill she would take the shirt off her back and give it to someone. Families need help to be educated. We knew this person growing up then all of a sudden this switch went off.'
