Carl Dempsey of Kilmacanogue, Co Wicklow was taking part in the Gaelforce race on Maamturk mountain on September 11th, 2021 when he became ill and passed away

A woman whose husband died while participating in an adventure race in Connemara two years ago has said that the organisers of Ironman in Youghal, Co Cork should have cancelled the event when two competitors died during the opening swim section last Sunday.

His wife Lorraine Dempsey told the Opinion Line, on Cork’s 96FM, that she was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Meath native Brendan Wall and Canadian national Ivan Chittenden at an Ironman event last Sunday. Lorraine commended the people of Youghal for holding a candlelit village as a mark of respect to the two athletes. “Things like that are so meaningful for the families even though they mightn’t be here.

"Carl’s pinnacle of the year was Gael Force West usually held in Mayo-Galway direction and he did a huge amount of training for this throughout the year. On Saturday morning he was with the super fit and they headed off around 7am. He was bombing along with the top ten. We heard from people he was complaining along the way of a bit of indigestion and was regretting a banana he had. The next part was kayaking and that was grand.
