The Government’s housing target for the year is 29,000.

Building started on 25% more homes last month compared to the same period last year, new figures have suggested.

This is an increase of 25% on the number of new homes commenced in the same month last year when 2,060 units were started. In the first six months of 2023, some 15,561 new homes have been commenced, a 10% increase on the same period last year.Sinn Féin’s house spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin said that while new commencements are welcome, not enough homes are being built.

“What I'm also concerned about is the [Housing] Minister [Darragh O’Brien] has yet to publish his quarter one and quarter two social housing and affordable housing output. “Until we see not only the overall number of new homes delivered this year but the breakdown of those in terms of social and genuinely affordable, we won't know to what extent those month-on-month figures are actually going to see this crisis get better.”
