Pledge no 3 is to “give employees access to, and pointing them towards, emotional counselling during this period, while the fourth and final pledge is to “provide signposting and access to separation support services so that parents can have the guidance and support that they need to separate in the most compassionate and child-focused way”.

James Hayhurst, founder of The Positive Parenting Alliance, states with genuine fervour: “We want to change the culture of separation in the UK, and employers can play a critical first step.” But I seriously question whether either of these last two pledges should be within an employer’s remit. Is not somewhat patronising and intrusive? We’re grown-ups. We know how to google emotional counselling these days or download a helpful app without HR doing it for us.

I have no doubt that this initiative is full of good intentions, but it feels at least partly misdirected. One of the biggest problems workers currently face, and which impacts hugely on family life, is the. Being “on” 24/7, replying to emails and texts out of office hours and feeling obliged to work weekends while not even being paid overtime are playing havoc with relationships.

I feel that this initiative, far from addressing the problem, compounds it by further muddying the divide between what should be clearly defined areas of our lives. Healthier, by far, is to aim for both flexibility for all and a work life that is
