Garcia: Election workers are under siege and we’re all paying the price

People vote at Parman Library at Stone Oak, Monday, Feb. 14, 2022. Early voting for the March 1 primary elections started on Monday and run through Feb. 25. Early voting sites will be close on Monday, Feb. 21, for President’s Day. Hours are Monday through Saturday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.They put in long hours for modest pay and provide the invaluable human infrastructure that makes our democratic system function.

This week, Anissa Herrera, the elections administrator for Gillespie County, an hour north of San Antonio, resigned her position. Keep in mind that Trump carried Gillespie County with 79 percent of the vote in 2020, on his way to carrying the state of Texas. But GOP activists were nonetheless angry with Herrera and her staff.

There’s also the case of Heider Garcia, the elections administrator in Tarrant County, who has been targeted by various right-wing groups. Garcia, a computer-science engineer who once worked with a voting technology company called Smartmatic, was accused by Republicans of using his tech skills to turn Tarrant County blue.Brad Raffensperger, Georgia’s Republican secretary of state, was hounded by Trump after Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden narrowly won the state in 2020.
