Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Wednesday said she “misspoke” in an interview earlier this month when asked about a potential U.S. government review of Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter, adding that such a probe could be appropriate.
In an interview with CBS News in Bali, Indonesia, in mid-November, Yellen said she saw “no basis” for launching an investigation into Musk’s purchase of the social-media company. As CBS noted, her comments came just days after President Joe Biden said the deal was worthy of being looked at on national security grounds.
On Wednesday, Yellen said at the New York Times DealBook summit that she misspoke in that interview. She said that an interagency review would be appropriate if government officials believe there are security risks associated with the deal’s foreign investors, according to a Times reporter. In his comments on Nov. 9, Biden stressed that he wasn’t saying Musk was doing “anything inappropriate.”
At least one Democratic senator, meanwhile, has called for probing the security implications of Saudi Arabia’s stake in Twitter after Musk took over the company.
