We recently caught up with Birmingham to discuss the Yellowstone phenomena, the importance of his character and increasing roles for Native American actors.
One thorn in their side is Chief Thomas Rainwater, portrayed by veteran actor Gil Birmingham .
Gil, congrats on the latest season of “Yellowstone.” What is it about this show that has created such fervor and dedication among viewers? Depending on what season you’re talking about, there are always these external factors that come into play. Some of them are opportunities for Rainwater to kind of leverage an alliance with John . In the beginning, it was quite adversarial. There’s a coming together at times that can benefit both of them. In season 4, we got set up to expect a certain storyline and season 5 kind of blows it out of the water once he runs for governor.
It’s really important that the portrayal of a native character is respectful as it is on the show because we’ve got a history of being portrayed in such an unauthentic and denigrating way. To have a character that’s contemporary has agency and has leverage of power, the responsibility of that portrayal is important.They’re extremely proud and complimentary. I just met a chairman at a charity event who told me she’s watching my show to learn how she can be a better chairman.
