PETALING JAYA: Men’s doubles pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi put their disappointment behind by getting off to a great start in the Singapore Open.

The world No. 10, who withdrew from the Malaysian Masters after Yew Sin tested positive for Covid-19 last week, only needed 29 minutes to sweep aside Thailand’s Supak Jomkoh-Kittinupong Kedren 21-14, 21-14 in the first round.Fellow independent pair Goh V Shem-Low Juan Shen were also dominant in their 21-12, 21-10 win over India’s Shyam Prasad-S. Sunjith.V Shem-Juan Shen will either take on Indonesia’s Sabar Gutama-Moh Isfahani or home pair Andy Kwek-Jason Wong in the second round.

In the qualifying round, Chia Weijie-Low Hang Yee did well to beat Taiwan’s Chang Ko-chi-Po Li-wei 21-18, 21-23, 21-16 to book their spot in the tournament proper. Weijie-Hang Yee, who are currently 133rd in the world, will next face compatriots and world No. 37 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun for a place in the second round.

Tien Ci made up for his loss when he combined with Lim Chiew Sien in the mixed doubles to oust Ireland’s Joshua Magee-Moya Ryan 21-11, 21-16 in just 28 minutes.
