Cork GP and TV presenter Dr Phil Kieran’s has answered all our suncream questions from reactions to SPF and why we shouldn’t be using last year’s cream
When it comes to choosing our kids’ sunscreen we can get overwhelmed - we want the best for our little darlings but the more expensive cream does not necessarily mean the best protection, it is about finding what suits your kids skin best.Firstly, they do go off and this can cause a reaction when you apply them. The shelf life of suncream, from the time it is manufactured, is roughly around three years, if it is stored in a cool, dark place.
Is there a difference between factor 30 and factor 50 as it is believed once you get over 30 all spf’s are the same. There is a difference. In the laboratory testing - with factor 10 it takes ten times as long to get burnt as if you weren’t wearing anything. Now, I suspect outside lab conditions the numbers do not add up that linear and definitely as you go higher - so if you have a Factor 25, the factor 50 is probably not twice as long lasting but it is definitely more protection. I still recommend factor 50 as it is more protection than factor 30.
Are the more expensive sun cream better? Especially for kids with sensitive skin, they are limited to the more expensive sun creams A lot of more expensive ones are very effective but the cheaper ones tend to work just as well but you may have to apply them more regularly. If your child has sensitive skin, then perfumed sun creams are not a great idea as they will react. But with my own kids, there are only two brands of cream they don’t react to, and we figured this out over time after they would get a sandpaper rash. We tend to use a boots own brand sun cream and Piz Buin sensitive.
