A Scots doctor has told of his hell after a young patient died on his ward because he was too busy to check on him
.
He wrote: “I reviewed a man in his mid-30s who was complaining of chest pains and shortness of breath. He was clearly very worried about his condition and told me he had a hard time after contracting Covid a couple years ago and never fully recovered. While assessing him we were talking for the whole time to try and distract him.
“The next day I got asked to verify a death and recognised the bracelet instantly. I broke down crying. I still struggle to hold it together when I think about it.” At the same time, Google searches for doctor jobs in Australia increased by 255 per cent and nurse jobs in Australia by 122 per cent. Most of the forum posts are anonymous but come from every corner of the UK.
But he said overall the reason for him quitting was, “The deteriorating health of those who work in the health service”. Top news stories today Simon Barker, deputy chair of BMA Scotland, said: “This is clearly very upsetting for the doctor and the family of the deceased patient. We are desperately short-staffed across our NHS in Scotland – we simply don’t have enough doctors. Many are choosing to leave the profession due to exhaustion, burnout, poor work-life balance alongside years of sub-inflationary pay uplifts.
