The game at the Rookery on Roe Lane was ended by the referee and an investigation is now underway
A 15-year-old boy suffered broken bones and nerve damage after he was attacked during a football match in Southport.
The incident took place at around 10.30am on January 14 at the Rookery on Roe Lane. Police were called to reports of an assault on the teenager by another boy after an altercation broke out between two teams. Officers say he suffered a fractured eye socket, fractured nose and nerve damage as a result of the assault. The game was ended by the referee and an investigation is now underway.A Merseyside Police spokesperson told the ECHO: "We can confirm that officers are investigating following an assault at a youth football match in Southport earlier this month. At around 10.
