'Testing' a 'Full Self-Driving' Tesla in Detroit snow looks reckless and embarrassing.
The system isn't ready for these conditions. But this YouTube"tester" says he is"risking his life" for"content."That's how YouTuber Detroit Tesla describes his winter"test" of Tesla's"Full Self-Driving" software, version 10.69.25. He says the system is hapless in the snow, unpredictable, and incapable of moderating its own speed safely.
What he doesn't mention in that first quote, and only alludes to later on, is that by using unfinished software in difficult conditions, he is also risking the lives and property of anyone else using the public roads and sidewalks nearby. The stakes are quite high. And in a 500-hp car sliding wildly—which suggests it may not be on the best tires for winter conditions—the driver's ability to safely regain control is severely limited.
He comes to an area where wind has kicked up snow and the road isn't plowed. He says,"I can't even see anything, but let's put on FSD. Some of you are probably watching this like, 'this guy is crazy..." He cuts his thought short and says"Jesus" as the car hits a bump and starts to slide across the road. He disengages FSD, again."I think it went up on a curb... big time.
He entertains that it may have been a pile of snow, but reaffirms that he thinks it was a curb. He says he'll have to go back later to check, as he couldn't see the road. That calls into question his ability to supervise the car's driving, which Tesla maintains is integral to safe operation of Full Self-Driving.
The company will happily blame the driver for using it in such unsafe conditions. The driver, though, seems well-intentioned and is trying to expose the shortcomings of the system. Neither takes full responsibility for the danger posed by untrained customers testing the limits an overconfident and unfinished system on public roads. Public comments by chief executive Elon Musk suggest far more capability than the system already has, subtly encouraging true believers to push the limits.
