By day, Oscar teaches Yup’ik cultural studies to both junior high and high school students at the Lower Kuskokwin School District. “It’s humbling to have this opportunity to decolonize students, and to teach them our traditional ways,” says Oscar. In his free time, he’s also a skilled designer, specializing in producing traditional Yup’ik pieces such as headdresses, mukluks, earrings, and bags, all of which are adorned with traditional wolf furs or sealskin.
Using wolf and beaver pelts, cotton, bias tape, and beads, he’s produced hundreds of the striking headdresses for his community. They usually take about a full day to make a single one. “Traditionally, before they started using wolf fur, they used caribou hair,” says Oscar. “But in my culture, they say that wolves have more energy and manifestation than any other animal.”
