A former underage star with Laois, Tuohy has just released his autobiography after a 14-season career in the AFL with Carlton Blues and Geelong Cats.
Zach Tuohy's AFL career followed a different arc to just about every Irishman who tried their hand at Australia n rules football.
Flynn had significant sleep issues, largely brought about by silent reflux, which meant his parents weren’t getting much shuteye either. Inevitably, that spilled over into Tuohy’s football.
While in Australia, he missed his sister’s wedding and his granny’s funeral, which he regrets now, particularly as he knows that his bosses would have facilitated a trip home. “I kind of had that approach with all this stuff as well where it doesn’t serve you well because if you’re struggling as bad as I was or some men are you shouldn’t just , ‘F**k it’ and get on with it.
“I was having games where I wasn’t even playing poorly, I rarely played poorly this year, but I just wasn’t impacting. I was kind of doing everything right, running into the right spots, was feeling physically pretty good but just ghosting. I just felt like I was running around.
