Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi following the controversial firing of Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, sparking protests and a military leadership crisis.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has removed his top general, Oleksandr Syrskyi, following the earlier dismissal of Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. The decision comes after weeks of public protests and a deepening rift between the two men's camps, representing a clash between traditional military approaches and a modern, tech-driven strategy.
Zelenskyy stated he was forced to choose between them as their differences became irreconcilable. Fedorov, a 35-year-old tech-savvy minister, had become a symbol of hope for many Ukrainians, especially the youth, for his push to integrate drones and robotics into warfare. His firing after only six months sparked outrage, as it coincided with Ukraine's increased success in using long-range drones to strike Russian targets.
Protesters took to the streets with placards reading 'Fedorov is the defence minister', 'Don't mess with what works', 'Hands off Fedorov' and 'Bring Fedorov back'. In contrast, General Syrskyi, 60, was criticized by many as rigid and out of touch, with some referring to him as 'the Butcher' for the high casualties during the Battle of Bakhmut, though he disputed that narrative. The conflict extended beyond personalities; it was about the future direction of Ukraine's military.
Fedorov accused the military establishment, led by Syrskyi, of resisting procurement reforms and blocking innovation to preserve their own power. His removal prompted rare public dissent within the armed forces. General Mykhailo Drapatyi, commander of joint forces, voiced support for Fedorov, stating that 'silence does not protect the army; it only allows mistakes to accumulate.
' Colonel Pavlo Yelizarov, deputy commander of the air force, resigned, calling Fedorov's dismissal 'a great blow to the country's defence. ' Faced with this turmoil, Zelenskyy consulted with brigade commanders and sought to reassure both domestic and international audiences. Kyrylo Budanov, head of the president's office, warned that 'the enemy is closely watching every one of our internal disagreements and is waiting for us to start fighting among ourselves.
