Saskatoon police on the weekend arrested Zennen Thomas, who is charged with second-degree murder in connection with death of Kaylum Tom on Dec. 1.
Aaron Timoshyk, the program manager of Build Up Saskatoon, said earlier this month that Tom was thoughtful and had an infectious smile; he came to the program to seek an opportunity to move his life in a new direction.
The construction-based program offers opportunities, training and mentoring to people with multiple barriers to employment such as trauma, lack of education, addictions, past contact with the justice system, and racial and systemic discrimination. “He was a model crewmate, always eager to learn and who could always be counted on to bring positive energy to the shop or the job site. Kaylum was a great asset to the Build Up family, and we are devastated by the senseless loss of someone who had only just taken their first steps on their journey of change,” Timoshyk wrote in a statement.
