In April 1996, a psychologically disturbed 29-year-old Australian called Martin Bryant walked into a gun dealership and bought an unlicensed military grade semi-automatic machine gun.

Shortly afterwards, he used it to murder 35 people and grievously wound 23 others in a mass shooting in the Tasmanian tourist town of Port Arthur. Sentenced to life without parole, Bryant will die in prison.
