101 paper and pen games to get you through tomorrow's mid-afternoon lull 🖊

And you know full well that if you retreat to your room to read a book or – whisper it – get out your phone, your family will moan about you failing to enjoy the quality time that’s part and parcel of the festive season. That’s where these games come in. The kind people over at Pukka Pads have put together a mega-list of 101 games for which you need just a pen and paper, so you don’t even need a full board game stash or any fancy gadgets.– Charades is great for getting all the family involved.

– Draw four squares on each end of the paper to represent your fortress. From there, play rock, paper, scissors to decide who gets to make a move. For each move, you can draw shields to protect your grounds or draw tanks and other weapons to ‘take down’ each other’s fortress. Let your imagination run wild – this game can literally go on forever.– Think of a word for each letter of the alphabet. The fastest wins.– Draw a four by four square and take turns calling out a letter.

– Draw one seven by seven grid of dots. Players then take turns in linking a pair of adjacent dots. The first player, Blue, always makes a vertical link, and the other player, Red, always makes a horizontal link. No dot can be linked more than once. The first player unable to move loses.– To create the board first draw a rectangular array of four by five blue dots. Then draw an overlapping array of five by four red dots. The players take turns in linking two adjacent dots of their own colour.

– In a four by four grid of letters make as many words as possible in two minutes. All words created must be at least three letters long.– This game is very simple, in a group you must take turns to write from one to 21. On each turn each player has the choice to count up by one, two, or three numbers. The loser is the person who has to write 21, so be strategic!– One person draws a quick squiggle and the other has the challenge of making a drawing out of it.
