The local businessman said it would help his company move towards Net Zero but many residents were concerned about the tall turbine being 500m from the historic village with 79 objecting
Award-winning butcher Simon Howie has been granted planning permission - subject to conditions - by Perth and Kinross Council to erect a 104m high turbine at his Perthshire farm.
Simon Howie Butchers was founded in December 1986 when Simon opened his first small shop in Dunning. In 1997 a 10,000 square feet factory was opened and is now eight times the size. The business supplies Tesco, Aldi, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, the Co-op, Asda and Gleneagles Hotel. He said: "A fair number of properties in Dunning have single glazing because they are listed and it's a conservation area."
In 2013 150Kw of solar panels were installed. This was stepped up to 2.1Mw of solar and 900Kw of battery back-up in 2023. The business has also installed two 15,000 litre water tanks - heated from electricity - displacing over 75 per cent of the gas required to heat the water. The business needs 30,000 litres of water per day- currently heated from gas - to wash down and clean the factory and equipment.
He said they selected the site - 270m southwest of the factory and around 550m from the southern edge of the Dunning Conservation Area - because it was "least impactful. Mr Howie said they could have generated four times as much power by putting it at the top of the hill but "didn't think it would be appropriate".
