Dublin is a place forever haunted by its past. Devoutly clinging to their religion through disastrous weather, extreme poverty and armed rebellion, the people ofIndustrialisation led to Dublin City becoming a highly-populated area. High population density led to overcrowding, which in turn led to poor sanitation and health.

The city's slums were considered the worst in Europe during the late 19th to early 20th Centuries. With little to no attention paid to labour conditions or environmentally-friendly production practices, the very air residents inhaled was polluted. The fight for Irish independence also took a toll on what would become the Republic's capital city. Lives, homes, and livelihoods were lost as both armed rebels and unarmed protestors faced off against Crown forces.

Old photographs show how unsettling a place Dublin could sometimes be in times of widespread poverty and war. Captured between the late 1800s and mid-1900s, the below images paint an eerie picture of the city and wider county's past.An umbrella-holding arm sticks out of the wall of a building to signpost an umbrella maker in Dublin, 1967
