Rory McIlroy has been one of the biggest vocal opponents to LIV Golf, speaking out against the Saudi-backed series as he defends the PGA Tour - but he has softened his stance in recent months
Rory McIlroy has been a staunch defender of the PGA Tour against LIV Golf ever since the breakaway series arrived in the world of golf.
In recent months, McIlroy has softened his stance against LIV Golf and, with reigning Masters champion and Ryder Cup hero Jon Rahm joining the series in the offseason, he acknowledged the talent on the opposite roster. He said: “Ultimately do have some of the best players in the world that are playing some really good golf.
In an interview with Sky Sports’ Stick to Football, McIlroy suggested he was ‘too judgemental’ of his peers who left for LIV Golf. The 34-year-old admitted how he has been wrong over the last two years and that he viewed the struggle in professional golf with an “altruistic approach” - and he was perhaps too judgemental.
McIlroy has also spoken surprisingly highly of PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan. McIlroy said he met Al-Rumayyan at the end of 2022 and asked him what he wanted to do with golf, a conversation that eventually led to the controversial framework agreement between the PIF and the PGA Tour.
