Expecting a 49ers-dominant crowd in Mexico City, linebacker Fred Warner says they’ll “make them proud of us” in Monday night’s game against the Arizona Cardinals.
AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – The 49ers are gambling that, after a chilly week here, their lungs are ready for the 7,218-foot summit that is Estadio Azteca, site of Monday night’s game in Mexico City against the Arizona Cardinals.Tests in mental fortitude arose thanks to unexpected, bone-chilling weather and snow showers, the opposite of what awaits when they fly today south of the border.
A month removed from the team’s West Virginia layover, Jimmy Garoppolo agreed this was a peculiar trip, saying: “Nick worded it pretty well.” Garoppolo added that the altitude indeed tested teammates, that “guys were sucking air a little bit. But it’s good for us. We’re going to play in that Monday.”
Here are five ways the 49ers can win and have more fun than their 2005 visit, when they lost to the Cardinals 31-14 in the NFL’s first regular-season international game:One of the NFC West’s best matchups features 49ers tight end George Kittle and Cardinals safety Budda Baker. Both have made big-time plays, and Kittle has come away injured from a couple of interactions.
Baker was called one of the NFL’s best players by 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans. But Baker is battling an ankle injury, one of many health issues crippling the Cardinals this season. The 49ers’ secondary will have their lungs tested the most against that corps, and starting cornerback Charvarius Ward missed practices this week while excused for a family matter.
