Here’s a example: If you had a child who was worried about a loud booming noise in the sky , you’d soothe them by saying something like, “It’s okay, that loud noise you hear is just thunder.” The same thinking can be applied to situations of intense financial stress or anxiety: Identifying that your panicky feeling is coming from opening your monthly credit card bill, say, may help your brain realize you’re not in immediate danger.
Another tool I sometimes recommend when financial anxiety manifests physically is to, literally, shake it off. If your heart is racing, your stomach is in knots, or your breathing becomes shallow when thinking about signing up for life insurance at work, say, you can try standing up and shaking your arms or legs .
