Goals from Adam Idah and Evan Ferguson helped Ireland keep their League B status.
Ireland’s ability to shoot themselves in the foot never ceases to amaze, but Heimir Hallgrimsson’s team are finding ways to overcome it.
But then Ferguson shook the rust from his powerful frame to slam a 63rd minute equaliser to put Ireland ahead in the tie, before Idah won it with five minutes to go. At the same time, Hungary suffered a 6-1 aggregate pasting by Turkey while Georgia smashed Armenia 9-1 over two legs. They struggled to get on the ball, never mind break into Ireland’s half as the Boys in Green launched five decent attacks in that opening ten-minute spell.
Azaz - who scored Ireland’s first in Plovidiz - then drilled a rising shot wide from the edge of the box, but there was clear intent to Ireland’s play. But they celebrated with gusto when Valentin Antov finished from eight yards when O’Brien and Collins failed to deal with Georgi Milanov’s shot from the edge of the box.
Umut Meler picked up an injury in the latter stages of that opening half and had to be replaced at the break by the fourth official, compatriot Mehmet Turkman.
