A group led by billionaire Michael Andlauer has won the bid to purchase the Ottawa Senators, sources tell ian_mendes. Andlauer will agree to purchase the team for close to $1 billion, Sportico reported.

Andlauer’s group and Senators Sports & Entertainment’s board of directors entered into an agreement to purchase 90 percent and operational control of the club.

The one question people had over the past couple of weeks was whether Andlauer was willing to raise his price on the Senators. As, many wondered if Andlauer was willing to go too much past the $900 million U.S. dollar mark to secure the Senators franchise. The feeling was Andlauer felt the true valuation of the Senators was closer to the $800 million or $850 million mark.

According to the story, Andlauer required hip surgery to repair damage from the rigors of playing the position in the spring of 2009. That necessitated a trip to a specialty clinic in Colorado, that just happened to be operated by then-Canadiens owner George Gillett. The two men connected and a short while later — when Gillett sold the Canadiens — Andlauer was tabbed to be one of the minority owners.

In December, Andlauer’s company announced he had raised $86.6 million by selling shares in the Andlauer Healthcare Group.
