Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín has written to the Comptroller and Auditor General requesting a probe into spending by the Office of Public Works (OPW) following ongoing revelations about the cost of projects like a €1.4bn security hut and a €335K Leinster House bike shed.
Aontú leader Peadar Tóibín has written to the Comptroller and Auditor General requesting a probe into OPW spending.
Green Party leader Roderic O’Gorman told the Irish Mirror on Thursday that it was “deeply frustrating” at a time when ministers are “fighting for every cent” in budget negotiation. “I am asking you to immediately investigate the OPW and publish a report on these matters as they relate to value for money and the administration of public funds.”“We are waiting for 7 years for the planning permission for life saving OPW projects such as the Midleton flood defences, yet money is being squandered on pet projects for the political class,” he said.
“Shockingly it appears that the audit of these overspends is going to be outsourced and will go to tender. This will mean that there will be a big chunk of extra cost to investigate the extra cost already incurred. A spokeswoman for Minister Paschal Donohoe stated that an “extraordinary amount of money” had been spent on the security hut and “people will rightly want to know how and why”.
