BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - SEPTEMBER 22: A fan holds a sign as Trey Mancini #26 of the Houston Astros waits to bat against the Baltimore Orioles during the second inning at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on September 22, 2022 in Baltimore, Maryland. BALTIMORE — With their No. 1 starter on the mound against an inconsistent Orioles lineup, a no-hitter seemed within the realm of possibility for the Astros at Camden Yards on Thursday night.

A Baltimore squad desperately chasing the American League’s final wild card spot got the best of Houston’s division champion ballclub, which with the loss wasted a chance to gain further ground on clinching the top seed in the AL. After allowing three hits and no runs in his last three starts combined, Houston ace Justin Verlander surrendered six hits and two runs in six innings against Baltimore. He struck out four batters and did not issue a walk while throwing 93 pitches, but was plagued by early inefficiency. The outing increased his season ERA to 1.82 — still not a significant blow to his chances at a Cy Young Award.
