Match preview: Ireland are out for revenge tonight having lost 2-1 to Greece in June
Whenever the dust eventually settles on Stephen Kenny’s tenure, the usual post-mortem will be carried out.But without the results to back up all the fighting talk, there will naturally be more lows than highs in this particular tale.
And not just under Kenny, because those two results are Hall of Fame contenders for the worst of the worst in the history of Irish football. Even the convoluted playoff scenario through the Nations League rankings has gone against Ireland and the chances of being in Germany next summer are all but dead in the water. But in defeat - particularly to the bigger nations - he feels the majority of the performances have reflected what he wants from his team.“Greece is an outlier from that,” admitted Kenny last month. “I'm not happy with Greece at all. I was disappointed.
“And they are a streetwise team, we saw that with the sending off of Matt Doherty, which was never a sending off. “We came out on the wrong side of a tight game. But the intensity we brought to Holland and France here in Dublin, I want that level of intensity.”
