The Derry native does not wear a poppy around remembrance day - when he was reported to have suffered the abuse in Stoke City's clash with Barnsley on November 9th
Barnsley FC have been charged by the FA after Republic of Ireland winger James McClean was allegedly subjected to sectarian abuse in November. And the FA have now stepped in to charge the Tykes, giving the club have until January 10th to respond to the charge.
A PFA statement read: "The Championship match between Huddersfield and Stoke City was halted and a stadium announcement was made warning against "offensive behaviour" due to sectarian chanting aimed at James McClean. "The PFA have previously advised James to report sectarian chanting to match officials and we are satisfied that in this instance the protocol was enacted. However, this action in isolation is not sufficient.
"In addition, as with other forms of discrimination, it has become clear that this type of abuse is on the rise and is becoming a weekly occurrence for James.
