Miss Universe Ireland Aishah Akorede has opened up about her crippling hidden illness on the show – and how Dancing With The Stars is helping her manage her condition.Aishah admits she was reluctant to talk about her illness on the RTE One show but decided to tell fans in the hope it would educate them after she dedicated her dance to her mother for being her pillar throughout her life on Sunday night’s show.
“And it's not something that I speak about, like, I don't tell people exactly what my illness is. There are a few reasons why. Number one, I don't want people to look at me and look at me as my illness. “I was lucky and blessed to have and I'm lucky and blessed to have a high haemoglobin F so I'm not getting a bit scientific right now, but this kind of usually presents in people from the Middle East, but obviously I'm African, so it's quite rare.
“When we were at the event in my old secondary school class, straight after the event, students were already coming to me, texting me to let me know that they're more willing to open up just from doing the event, and I can only imagine how, how much more comfortable they'll be knowing that I have the same illness.
