Kids are expensive – even more so when you are a single parent amid the biggest fall in living standards in generations.. I’m privileged to earn a decent wage, but even so I’m still feeling this pressure.
I became a dad at the relatively young age of 25. She was an “unexpected blessing”, but the idea of becoming of father unlocked a paternal instinct that I didn’t know I possessed. My microcosm no longer centred around me but around the cluster of cells that were multiplying in my then partner’s womb. I duly made an oath to myself to do everything in my power to ensure that my daughter lives a comfortable and happy life.To cut a long story short, I whipped my finances into shape. I’ve always been pretty decent at managing my money – well, post university – and I tweaked my budget to account for both mini-me and my then partner. Things were going well – until they weren’t.
