'I don't want to lose my house and not be able to feed my kids and that's what it boils down to'
A family has been left facing an uncertain future after a dad was told he may have to wait years for a vital kidney transplant.
Chris and his family had hoped the procedure was a success, after living a normal life for several years. He even tied the knot with wife, Anneka Watkinson in April. But by the time the wedding approached, Chris's kidneys were once again deteriorating. Currently, they are at seven per cent capacity. "Occasionally, he's a bit low as well so he has to do EPO injections every two weeks. He's really short of breath and his Hb is low, he doesn't have enough red blood cells to transport the oxygen around his body, so he's just tired and out of breath all the time.
Chris and Anneka are now looking to find a solution down the 'live donor' route, with Anneka's mum and Chris's uncle currently being tested to see if their matches. However, the pair also have to undergo a echocardiogram to see if they can viably donate their kidneys, but this is another four to six month wait."If she's not suitable, then obviously we're back to square one trying to find another two people," Anneka explained.
A former nurse and now self-employed Anneka works from home and can look after Chris and her children when she's needed, but her sole income is stretching the family. The couple have looked into mortgage holidays and breaks from their bills, but to no avail.
